How to Calculate Spindle Speed (RPM)

Machinists start cutting planning from the tool manufacturer's catalog cutting speed (Vc or SFM), which depends on the workpiece alloy and insert coating. Spindle RPM is then computed to ensure the tool perimeter moves at that exact surface speed.

Metric RPM Formula

With cutting speed Vc in meters per minute (m/min) and diameter D in millimeters:

RPM = (1,000 × Vc) / (π × D)

The 1,000 multiplier converts meters of linear cutting distance into millimeters to match cutter diameter units.

Imperial RPM Formula

With surface speed in feet per minute (SFM) and tool diameter D in inches:

RPM = (12 × SFM) / (π × D) ≈ (SFM × 3.82) / D

The 12 multiplier converts feet into inches (12 / π ≈ 3.8197, often rounded to 3.82 by machinists).

How do you calculate CNC spindle RPM from cutting speed?

In metric units: RPM = (1,000 × Vc) / (π × Tool Diameter in mm). In imperial units: RPM = (12 × SFM) / (π × Tool Diameter in inches), commonly approximated as (SFM × 3.82) / Diameter.

What happens if spindle RPM is set too high?

Excessive RPM generates extreme friction and thermal heat at the cutting edge, leading to rapid carbide crater wear, flank wear, and thermal cracking, especially without high-pressure coolant.

How does cutter diameter affect spindle RPM?

Spindle RPM is inversely proportional to cutter diameter. A smaller tool must spin much faster than a large face mill to achieve the same peripheral surface cutting speed.

What is the difference between SFM and RPM?
